Achieve Together

A whole-school approach to attract, retain and develop excellent teachers.

The project

Teach First, Teaching Leaders and Future Leaders are piloting a collaborative model of recruiting and developing high-potential individuals in schools with high proportions of pupils eligible for free school meals. The project, which has also attracted £1 million co-funding from J.P. Morgan is first being piloted in Bournemouth and will then work in secondary schools around the country. The programme offers the following support from the three main partners:

  • Teach First, a charity offering fast-track entry to teaching for bright graduates, will provide new teachers.
  • Teaching Leaders, which strengthens the capacity of middle leaders (e.g. department heads), will implement its core two-year programme and discrete training modules.
  • Future Leaders, a charity focused on developing outstanding leaders for challenging schools, will place three teachers from its three-year programme into each cluster. A further 20 senior leaders will take selected training modules.

Alongside these specific interventions, the partners will facilitate a community of collaborative working between the schools, the partner charities, and local government and business. 

Why are we funding it?

It is widely recognised that the quality of teaching a pupil receives has a significant impact on their achievement in school, but there is not enough evidence on the most effective ways to improve teaching quality. The problem of how to improve teaching and leadership in areas of high deprivation is of particular importance. This project is testing a promising solution involving three ambitious education charities. All the programmes involved in the Achieve Together project are relatively new and complex to measure, but each has some encouraging initial evidence.

Who are we partnering with on it?

J.P. Morgan will be funding the full £1.1m costs of the initiative in Bournemouth, where the firm has around 4,000 employees and a strong track record of investment in the area. You can read the announcement of this co-funding for 'Achieve Together' here.

How are we evaluating it?

The impact evaluation is being performed by a team from the Institute for Fiscal Studies. The evaluation is set up as an effectiveness trial. Effectiveness trials aim to test whether an intervention can work at scale in a large number of schools. Of the 48 schools recruited by the main programme, 24 will be randomly assigned to receive the intervention and 24 will form a control group.

The programme will undergo a process evaluation conducted by NatCen.
