A new survey has shown that 45% of school leaders are using the Sutton Trust-EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit to inform their spending decisions, up from 36% in 2013. Among secondary school leaders the proportion rises to 54%.

The Toolkit is an accessible summary of educational research which provides guidance for teachers and schools on how to use their resources to improve the attainment of disadvantaged pupils. It has been developed by a team of academics at Durham University led by Professor Steve Higgins.

In 2014/15, the Pupil Premium provides schools with an extra £1,300 for every pupil eligible for free school meals in primary schools and an extra £935 for eligible pupils in secondary schools.

The survey of 1,163 teachers was conducted by the National Foundation for Educational Research and commissioned by the Sutton Trust.
