Commenting on today’s Public Accounts Committee’s report on funding for disadvantaged pupils, Sir Kevan Collins, Chief Executive of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), said today:

We welcome the Public Accounts Committee’s recognition of the role of the Education Endowment Foundation and the importance of evidence in supporting the spending of the pupil premium.

There is no doubt that the pupil premium has enabled schools to do more to improve the outcomes of their less advantaged pupils. But equally, the committee is right that we still have much to do to ensure that all those from poorer families reach their potential, particularly those in coastal and rural communities.

As we learn more about what works, it is vital that after the spending review, the pupil premium continues to be paid to schools for all their disadvantaged pupils, regardless of their attainment, so that they all achieve their potential.

The committee is right that we need to encourage schools to use evidence-based interventions to make sure the pupil premium is being spent in the most effective ways. That is why we have argued that we should extend the existing rewards scheme so that schools that succeed for their disadvantaged pupils are rewarded through the funding system.”
