We want to know which choices leaders and teachers are interested in us evaluating. It could be choices you are making in relation to your English and Maths provision, timetabling, technical and vocational teaching and learning, or professional development to name a few.
At the EEF, we have been evaluating the effectiveness of educational programmes (packages that schools and colleges can ‘buy in’) since 2011. However, we are also interested in evaluating the choices colleges make when thinking about how best to support their learners. This is where‘setting choices’ and‘teacher choices’ trials play a vital role in building the 16 – 19 evidence base.
Setting choices trials focus on decisions that leaders make around setting-wide practices and approaches, while teacher choices trials focus on the decisions teachers make about their own practice.
Some setting choices trials currently underway include:
- Different strategies being used by colleges to address poor learner attendance
- The impact of GCSE resit exam enrolment timing (November vs June) on English and Maths resit outcomes
- Number of taught hours per week for GCSE resit students and how this affects English and Maths outcomes
