As you develop the quality of practice, you will be considering children’s individual strengths and needs. Using a balanced approach, you can target Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) spending on improvements to support the particular needs of children from lower-income families by:

Carefully tailoring the support they receive.
Offering extra help and teaching to meet their needs.
Using research evidence to inform your decisions.

Tailoring personalised support does not necessarily mean introducing something new. Instead, you might refine something that is already happening to better support children eligible for EYPP.

We were using WellComm, a language screening tool, but we questioned whether we were using it well. That’s why over three years, we invested in training and professional development related to WellComm. Our aim was to build practitioners’ understanding of the tool and how to use it to adapt their daily interactions with children. We also wanted to think about how to give extra support to children with the biggest gaps in language.
