Understanding how leaders can support transitions between educational phases to improve learner outcomes.

This mixed method review will summarise the available evidence for supporting educational transitions. 

Educational transitions represent critical junctures in learners’ trajectories. The review aims to understand the challenges experienced by learners, settings, and families during different transitional stages, and to identify approaches to transition that can have a positive effect on learners.

It will cover four transition points:

  • transition into Early Education school-based settings;
  • transition from Reception to Year 1;
  • transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3; and
  • transition from secondary school to post-16 education.
