Today, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has published an independent evaluation of another educational programme, bringing the total number of complete EEF-funded projects to date to 156.
Increasing Competence and Confidence in Algebra and Multiplicative Structures (ICCAMS)
The Increasing Competence and Confidence in Algebra and Multiplicative Structures (ICCAMS) intervention aims to improve mathematics teaching and learning in Years 7 and 8 (for pupils aged 11 – 13). The intervention is designed to help teachers use formative assessment to gauge pupils’ grasp of multiplicative reasoning and algebra.
The effectiveness trial of ICCAMS involved 109 schools and approximately 20,800 pupils, and took place from September 2016 to July 2018.
The evaluation, undertaken by University of Manchester, found that pupils in receipt of ICCAMS made on average no additional progress in mathematics compared to those in control schools. This result has a moderate to high security rating.
The full evaluation report, together with the EEF’s commentary on the findings, is available here.
