The Education Endowment Foundation is an independent charity dedicated to breaking the link between family income and educational achievement. We do this by supporting schools, colleges, and early years settings to improve teaching and learning through better use of evidence.
Recent EEF research on teacher recruitment and retention
1. Financial incentives
- A review of the global evidence base – published in June 2023 – found that offering financial incentives – such as higher salaries and performance and recruitment bonuses – could be effective for attracting teachers to roles in challenging schools.
2. Flexible working and workload
- Evidence from a literature review, case studies and interviews with experts – published in November 2023 – concluded that flexible working could help to improve wellbeing and job satisfaction, as well as teachers’ productivity and motivation.
