Early stage programme development – funded projects

Discover the early stage programmes the EEF has funded and helped to deliver.

Our new early-stage programme development work supports organisations to design, develop and deliver programmes that tackle educational disadvantage.

This cycle of Development projects was led by external delivery teams who had either applied for early-stage programme development or pilot funding as part of EEF’s open funding round theme in in Early Years themes including Personal, Social Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Early maths and Reading. For all of these of these projects, the funding to support participation of settings – was funded through the DfE’s Stronger Practice Hubs work.

This cycle of Development projects was led by external delivery teams who had either applied for early-stage programme development or pilot funding as part of EEF’s open funding round theme in Writing. The funding to support participation of settings – was funded through the Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund.

Two concurrent cycles of Innovation projects (one led by the Research School Network and one by external delivery teams) were funded predominantly by the Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund. Four projects (two in each cycle) in Cognitive Science were funded by the Kusuma Trust and one project led by an external delivery team was fully funded by the EEF. Research schools submitted an Expression of Interest and external delivery teams applied through EEF’s open funding round themes in Early Language, Cognitive Science, and Maths.

Due to the timelines of these projects, only four projects across both cycles were eligible to apply for further funding at the time of publication. As a result, the list of projects below does not reflect the total size of the cycles, which had seventeen projects.

Early Years development programmes

This cycle of Development projects was led by external delivery teams who had either applied for early-stage programme development or pilot funding as part of EEF’s open funding round themes in Personal, Social, and Emotional Development, Early Language, and Early Maths. For seventeen of these projects, the funding to support participation of settings – was funded through the DfE’s Stronger Practice Hubs work. Two projects were funded through the Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund and one project was fully funded by the EEF.

Research School development programmes

One cycle of development projects were led by the Research Schools Network and funded through the Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund. These programmes were supported through the previous ESPD round.

The concurrent cycle of development projects were led by external delivery teams who initially applied for pilot funding through an open funding round theme in early language/early maths, and were offered the opportunity to considered for a development cycle instead. Part of these projects – the funding to support participation of settings – was funded through the DfE’s Stronger Practice Hubs work.

These nine development projects were led by the Research Schools Network and funded through the Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund. Research Schools were invited to take part through an Expression of Interest process.
