Pilot evaluation to test the feasibility of implementation, evidence of promise and readiness for trial of Maths Through Picture Books: a 10-week targeted small-group intervention for Reception-age children that uses focused conversations around picture books to improve numeracy skills and confidence.

Maths Through Picture Books (MTPB) is a targeted intervention that aims to improve maths attainment for reception-aged children (4 – 5 years old) through shared reading and focused conversations based on carefully selected picture books with mathematical content. Teaching Assistants (TAs) deliver two 20-minute sessions per week over a 10-week period to small groups of five children who have been identified as not yet having a secure understanding of number. Sessions use the ShREC approach (Share attention, Respond, Expand, Conversation) to support sustained, multi-turn conversations about number and operations.

Training is delivered by a team of expert practitioners from East London Research School (ELRS) to one teacher and one TA from each participating school. It includes an initial full-day, in-person session and a half-day, in-person follow-up at the end of delivery. Teachers also attend an online session focused on supporting their TAs, and both teachers and TAs are invited to an additional online drop-in session to support implementation.

The teacher and the TA meet weekly to support alignment between the intervention and broader classroom practice. Teachers observe the TA delivering the programme three times during the 10-week period. Each observation is followed by a same-day professional conversation in which the teacher provides feedback and supports the TA to reflect on the session using the ShREC framework – a structured summary of strategies that TAs can use during sessions.
