Trial to test the impact of offering primary school teachers the opportunity to complete Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) work offsite on teacher retention.

Schools: 242
Participating settings: 242

The aim of this evaluation is to explore whether a school policy enabling teachers to complete Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time offsite can improve teacher retention in primary schools. Most teachers currently complete timetabled PPA at school, but there is growing interest in whether offering teachers the option to spend this time working remotely could support teacher well-being, job satisfaction and retention.

Teachers have an important influence on pupils’ educational achievement. However, many schools in England are struggling to recruit and retain teachers, and schools with higher proportions of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to be affected by recruitment and retention challenges. There is a widespread perception among teachers and school leaders that increasing the availability of flexible working could improve teacher retention. This project aims to contribute towards the evidence-base on whether flexible working opportunities help to improve teacher recruitment and retention.
