It is six months since we launched an update to A School’s Guide to Implementation, in which time the report has become one of EEF’s most popular resources. This widespread interest, I think, reflects the common challenge that we all face in education – not just schools, but system leaders and policy makers – in turning promising ideas into meaningful actions.
The response to the new guidance has been really positive, in particular to the additional emphasis that is placed on the social and collaborative nature of change in schools. This is captured in Recommendation 1: ‘The behaviours that drive effective implementation’. Although a structured implementation process can help schools navigate change – e.g. Explore, Prepare, Deliver, Sustain – how people are involved in that process is key.
To support schools’ understanding of the Guidance Report, we have produced a new animation that provides an overview of the three recommendations, and, crucially, explains how they work together. For example, while the guidance identifies three cross-cutting behaviours that drive effective implementation – engage, unite, reflect – these behaviours rely on having a supportive infrastructure in place.
This animation will be helpful for school and setting leaders and their implementation teams. For full detail on all the recommendations, please do read the full guidance report linked below.
