Funding round focused on areas with gaps in the evidence base and with potential to benefit disadvantaged pupils.

Our first funding round of 2024 will focus on two themes, identified as having gaps in the evidence base and with potential to benefit socio-economically disadvantaged pupils.

Across the two themes and over the course of the year, we’ll fund different types of research – including evidence synthesis, practice reviews, quasi-experimental studies, and randomised controlled trials – to add to the evidence base of what we know about improving learning outcomes.

The ability to write is a vital skill that children learn in school. It is both an important attainment outcome in itself and a vital facilitator of success across various subjects. Writing proficiency matters beyond the classroom, playing a pivotal role in both professional and personal spheres. It is also a subject in which more research is needed to find successful approaches that align with promising evidence and address priorities in schools.

The objective of this themed funding is to support and evaluate programmes aimed at improving the writing outcomes of pupils aged 5 – 16 (Key Stage 1 – 4) in England.

Understanding and applying mathematical concepts is a crucial skill pupils must develop during secondary education. The lifetime earning returns of an extra GCSE grade in mathematics are higher than for any other subject. Yet, this is an area where pupils from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds fall increasingly behind their peers, and, on average, do not achieve a grade 4 or above at GCSE.

Funding in this theme will focus on evaluating programmes with the potential to improve secondary mathematics outcomes for pupils aged 11 – 16 (Key Stages 3 – 4) in England. This theme is co-funded with XTX Markets who aim to support more pupils, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds to progress to degrees, PhDs, and highly skilled careers in mathematics.
