Early maths and early literacy approaches added to Evidence Store |
|
Today, we’ve added two new themes to the Early Years Evidence Store to support educators in boosting young children’s learning and development.
Co-developed by researchers and educators, the updated store now explores approaches and offers practical advice around two more crucial areas of early years provision:
- Early maths
- Early literacy
Created through our work supporting the Department for Education’s Stronger Practice Hubs, the Evidence Store provides a summary of the best available evidence for each and - through videos and written examples - illustrates how they could be put into practice with children in all types of early years settings.

The power of story in the early years |
|
“Story provides strong foundations which later learning can be built upon. Evidence gives us the confidence that if we create a love of books and storytelling, then we can positively impact on children’s long-term outcomes.”
Becky Taylor, an experienced childminder based in Nailsea, North Somerset, explains how she has embedded ‘a storytelling culture’, to support her children’s early communication, language, and literacy development. |

Making the most of mathematical moments |
|
“We can make [mathematical] moments count by considering how our familiar practice – including everyday routines, learning environments and, most importantly, our role as educators – can be used to further develop and extend children’s mathematical learning and development.”
Maths specialist Kirsten Mulholland explains how to take advantage of opportunities for learning maths throughout the day. |

Early years voices needed! |
|
We’re looking for early years staff to take part in a focus group or pilot some resources in your setting to ensure it is clear and accessible to educators. Your insights will inform a research project we’re running with Coventry University to find out how small changes in practice can impact communication and language outcomes for young children.
As a thank you for taking part, you’ll receive a gift voucher. For more information, and contact details for taking part, click the link below. |
